Aksa Marshal has been a resident of Slough for the last 30 years, she lives with her husband and 2 daughters – Asa, 27 and Ana, 23, in Farnham Common.
Aksa is a full time carer looking after her eldest daughter who suffers from a physical disability called Cerebral Palsy. Besides being a carer for the last 27 years, Aksa is a teacher, an exercise instructor and founder of a successful women’s group called ‘Meet & Mingle’.
Aksa worked for the Slough Borough Council with the sports and leisure department for 7 years, but was made redundant due to cuts in 2013. With a great passion and heart for the community for carers, women and people with disabilities, Aksa felt a great need for a social club for women who are lonely, isolated, depressed or stressed or suffering from long-term illnesses and health issues.
A voluntary, non-profit organisation called ‘Meet & Mingle’ was established in January 2013 for local women in the community to help build self-esteem, encourage physical, mental and social well-being and to build friendship with fellow ladies in the community. ‘Meet & Mingle’ still only 3 years old, and award winner for 2014 & 2015, has proven to be a huge success, currently holding over 350 members. ‘Meet & Mingle’ organises many sessions, events, functions and workshops to achieve their aim, which is to :
socialise, share, learn, be creative, have fun and be healthy.’
The group has expanded into 3 branches within Slough, located in Wexham, Manor Park and Chalvey and has built other organisations within ‘Meet & Mingle’ such as a ‘Cancer Support Group’ for women and ‘A.S.A’ (Achieving Strong Aims) for young adults with physical disabilities. Aksa is passionate about helping everyone in need, she is well known in the community and within the group as a “loving, caring, understanding, well organised and a very humble person”.
Aksa was awarded ‘Volunteer of the year 2015’ on 20th November 2015 by SCVS (Slough Council for Voluntary Services) at the award ceremony in Heathrow Marriott Hotel, Slough.
Aksa believes that....
“loving is seeking the others happiness and by doing so, finding our own happiness”.
